Trailer for Xiao Hei Mao Theatre: Blank

The trailer for Blank, the Xiao Hei Mao’s 2024 fall drama, dives into the mysterious dance of fate. With no dialogue, the trailer expresses the delicate emotions of the characters, capturing their silent struggles as they face destiny’s twists. As director, scriptwriter, and editor, I aimed to capture this delicate balance between destiny and free will.

Initial Considerations

I began by reading the 60-page drama script to deeply understand the themes and characters. Collaborating with the drama director and assistant, we brainstormed potential narratives, focusing on how to visually capture the theme of fate without dialogue.

Iteration and Narrowing

After developing a proposal, script, and storyboard, I iterated to find the best structure that balanced character development and narrative within the 3-minute limit. We visited the drama rehearsals twice to ensure we selected the right talent for each role.

Production

I coordinated a single-day shoot at the University of Rochester in two studio locations. I created a group chat for each member and checked out the equipment in advance. Efficient scheduling and collaboration with the cast allowed for a seamless filming process.

Results

The trailer exceeded expectations, garnering over 800 views on social media and drawing 150 attendees to the drama showcase in mid-November. The cinematic and evocative trailer successfully communicated the delicate theme of fate, solidifying Blank as a standout production. This outcome demonstrated my ability to manage storytelling, logistical challenges, and creative direction effectively.
